Dorothy "Dot" Ates

August 16, 1933 ~ August 10, 2017 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Dorothy Lanora “Dot” Ates, age 83, passed away into God’s arms on the 10th day of August 2017. She was born on the 16th day of August 1933 in Bradley, Alabama to Charlie Burns (Sam) Elliott and Willie Mae Lee Elliott. Dot was a consummate homemaker. She was adored by her family and with the coming of grandchildren became known as “Granny Dot” to all. She was a fabulous cook and could “cook and old shoe and make it taste like it came from a 5-star restaurant”. Dot had a sense of humor that was always contagious yet her wise words of wisdom became words for all to treasure. She and Bob were members of Holt Assembly of God Church. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Bob Ates, son Steve Ates and his wife Cathy; grandson Mathew Ates and wife Bobbie Jo; granddaughters Amanda and Deanna Ates, great granddaughters, Chloe, Allie Mae and Caroline Ates. Dot also leaves behind her brother Virgil Elliott and wife Betty Dean, stepbrother Burns Elliott and wife Sherrie, step sisters Patricia Elliott Williams and Kathy Elliott Fuqua. She will be fondly missed by her nieces Ann Bodenstein, Helen Coxwell and nephews Glen and Larry Coxwell and Mark and David Elliott, other relatives and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Ricky Ates and grandson Robbie Ates; step brother Scotty Elliott. The celebration of Dot’s life will be Sunday the 13th of August, at 1:00 pm at the Chapel of Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Donnie Cadenhead officiating. Burial will follow in the New Holt Cemetery. A time of visitation with the family will begin at 12:00 pm.
