Zelma McKinney Tyner

Zelma Tyner age 90, of Pensacola and formerly of Laurel Hill passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016, in Hospice.  She was born in Alabama on June 7, 1926, to John and Lucille McKinney.  Zelma was raised in Laurel Hill and graduated from Laurel Hill High School in 1945.  After marrying her husband Leon they moved to Pensacola while her husband worked for Armstrong Corp.  After his retirement Zelma and Leon moved back to Laurel Hill, but in their later years they moved back to Pensacola to be near their daughter and son in law, who were her care takers.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of Laurel Hill and was baptized there.  Zelma enjoyed bowling, shopping, fishing and going to the casino.  She had her 90th Birthday party at Winn Creek Casino.  The last year of her life she lived at the Sabal House Assisted Living in Pensacola.  Zelma was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Leon Tyner, her parents: John and Lucille McKinney, and her brother Willie Frank McKinney.

            Survivors include her children: David Tyner and his wife Tracie of Houston, TX and Phyllis Morrow and her husband Leroy of Pensacola, FL.  Also surviving are her 4 grandchildren: Jason Tyner, Allen Tyner, Cheray Christain and John Leon Tucker; along with 11 great grandchildren. 

            The celebration of Zelma’s life will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home with Reverend Mike McVay officiating.  Burial will follow in the Almarante Cemetery in Laurel Hill.  A time of visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.  The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Sabal House and nurses of Covenant Hospice in West Florida Hospital and the nurses on the 2nd floor for the care and dedication that was shown to their mother.
