J. T. Garrett, lifetime resident of Crestview, Florida went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 3, 2024. He was born May 28, 1927 in Holt, Florida to James T. (Tommie) Garrett and Etta Sanders Garrett. After graduating from Baker High School in 1944, he proudly joined and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his service in the Navy he returned home and pursued his license in barbering. J.T. was a stand-in for Gregory Peck and also an extra in the 1949 movie Twelve O’Clock High while it was being filmed at what is now Duke Field and various other local sites around the area. He worked as a local barber for many years and later became an employee of The State of Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. After retirement from the State, J.T. enjoyed playing “Barney Fife” look-a-like in many local and national events and he loved every minute of it. He was a devout Christian, longtime member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Milligan. Everyone loved J.T. as he was always kind, caring, and helpful person that enjoyed making people laugh. He loved playing jokes on his friends and “clowning” around making him the life of the party. He also was a Master Mason and Shriner.
J.T. married his high school sweetheart, Elsie Boyette, on September 21, 1951 at The First Baptist Church of Milligan. He was a loving and caring Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather and Friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife of 68 years, Elsie.
J.T. is survived by one son Lynn Garrett and wife Tamela, one daughter Renee Garrett Barrow and husband Chris. Three granddaughters Kelly Wilson (Braxton), Kimberly Kellogg (Blaine), Kristin Campbell (Rawlins). Nine Great Grandchildren Garrett, Grey and Grant Wilson, Kai and Noah Kellogg, and Easton, Tucker, Charli Kaye and Davey Lynn Campbell. Special cousin Elaine Parker Cawthon.
