So sorry to be so late in posting this! "Better late then never!" Fred and Gene,Gail,Rick and yes you Debra{you were much younger then) were a very big part of our lives at one time. Spent a many of evenings with them! Fred taught me how to play golf(even though I was not good!)But I truly loved it and spent too much time at the Country Club! Fred was one of our best "customers"! So many good memorys.I am so glad that I saw Fred and Rick a couple of months ago, we talked forever. "Everything happens for a reason".

It was an honor to give up my well established career to move home to care for Fred and Gene...Since even before we lost Gail, my life and my husbands have revolved around being caregivers. I am so grateful for the way Rick stepped up and faithfully picked up Fred every day to get the paper and coffee...the many Dr. appointments that Rick took Fred too...its a beautiful site when a father and son reconcile. Caregiving is draining for all involved...It was hard, we got tired, we got worn down...But so worthwhile - I would give up a thousand careers for one more day with my two anchors - Fred and Gene- My only solace is that we will all be in Heaven again one day. I dearly love and miss the man that raised me as his daughter, some have said that I was only adopted "to provide benefits" but I assure you that was not the case with me...only someone cruel would lash out at a bereaved daughter.

My father, Capt. AF Schneider - married the love of his life Florragene Barnhill Schneider - it was 1949 and they were madly in love - Fred was about to go off for Flight Training - they snuck off across the state line to Thomasvillle, GA and eloped Dec. 15, 1949...two days after her birthday on Dec. 13. They didn't have much time together - she went back to college and he went off to flight training...she graduated and he survived flight training. They remarried for a second official time for Navy documentation on August 5, 1950. She was his first and second wife! So romantic...Gene preceded Fred in death in March 2011. The last wedding anniversary they celebrated was Dec. 15, 2010...they were married 62 (SIXTY TWO) years....(just needed to clarify that fact - some people were not clear about this)

One of my favorite stories that I loved to sit in my great grandmother Florence's lap and hear was about Fred as a young tot on his grandparents farm in Michigan...he was mischevious and inquisitive...Fred also had a dog - the dog picked him and he picked he dog. They were inseperable. The noble mutts name was "Ring" - Fred was missing some baby teeth and he lisped out "Wing." If Fred thought there was any chance corporal punishment was coming as a result of boyish misadventures - he yelled "Wing - come save me"- no adult could get between young Fred and his faithful friend Wing...that lasted a while but the grown ups got smart and would lock up the dog when Fred was about to be punished:)

Writing an obituary about a loved one that was so multi faceted can be overwhelming....I cannot leave out the fact that Fred had a Bausch and Lomb Scientific Scholarship when he graduated from Winter Park H.S. but he chose to serve his country and entered the United States Navy as a Flying Midshipmen. Since it was right after the war - all the men returning home after war were sent to the University of Florida. Fred was considered overflow and was sent off to Florida State College for Women. He loved every minute off it - met his Bride and her older sister Chippe. They were part of the class that renamed Florida State University and chose the mascot...Fred played on the first football team - back when the helmets were leather. He also played on the first basketball team...and he eloped to Thomasville GA with Gene...He spent his Naval Career flying everywhere, making friends, being a flight instructor at Whiting Field...(he retired when I was 2 so I missed all that excitement). Fred was a firm believer in giving back to the community. I lost count of all the fundraiser and scholarship golf tournaments he donated his time to...He was a major force behind establishing the Baker Area Youth Association - most especially the ball field... He coached many of today's community leaders in ball while they were in elementary school. Fred even coached some young golfers. He was much loved and will be much missed.
