John “Steve” Smith

          Steve Smith age 68 of Crestview passed away on Sunday evening October 6th, 2019 at Covenant Hospice at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. He was born in Pensacola on August 19, 1951 to Rembert Smith and Elizabeth Gatlin.  Steve grew up in the Pensacola and Crestview areas.  He graduated from Baker High School in 1970.  Steve worked for the Okaloosa County School System as a Courier for 25 plus years.  He was a people person and loved to talk and visit with folks while doing his rounds at the schools.  Steve was an avid sports fan and loved the Florida Gators.  He served his country in the United States Air Force Reserve and attended Woodlawn Baptist Church.  Most of all Steve loved his family.  Steve was preceded in death by his parents.

          Survivors include his wife of 27 years Jane Smith; son Michael Smith and his wife Caroline; 3 grandchildren: Devin Smith, Kendall and Karsyn Greggs; mother-in-law Minnie Thompson; Brothers & Sisters-in-law: Michael and Linda Thompson, John and Bess Thompson, Richard Thompson, and Fred and Denetta Thompson.  Numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many many friends also survive.

          A time of visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday October 9th, 2019 at Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m.  The celebration of Steve’s life will be on Thursday October 10th, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  Burial will follow in the Milligan Baptist Church Cemetery.
