Thomas Courtney Obituary

Thomas Aubrey Courtney age 55 of Arlington, VA passed away on January 2, 2020. He was born on October 22nd in Elmendorf AFB, Alaska to Aubrey and Susan Courtney of Baker, Florida. A creative and vibrant personality from birth, Tom had a knack for making even the simplest things beautiful.

Tom Courtney spent part of his career serving his country as a civil servant for the Department of the Navy. He also spent decades as an insightful marketing director and consultant. Colleagues have referred to Tom as a “creative force of nature,” holding him in high regard for his eye for design and attention to detail.

Tom was a beautiful soul who never met a stranger. Whether it was a coworker, a cashier, a server, or a random passerby, Tom would treat them like an old friend. Everyone was to be treated with the utmost respect because everyone had demons they were fighting, and Tom knew that struggle well. However, he was a fighter who used personal struggles as fuel for his artwork. The more he was fighting, the more detail and emotion went into his creations. Tom was also a devoted uncle. “Uncle Tommy” made it a point to show his nieces and nephews the importance of letting beauty shine through various works of art. Tom was also especially devoted to his mother, Susan, who he credited for his love of cooking and sewing.

Thomas was most certainly a force to be reckoned with and someone who is hard to describe in just a few paragraphs. He will be greatly missed.

Tom is survived by his loving parents, Aubrey and Susan Courtney, and siblings, Ralph Courtney (Kimberly) and Janet Jenkins (Jim). Four nieces, one nephew, and five great-nieces, all of whom knew him as “Funcle Tommy”. He was preceded in death by his eldest brother, Barry Courtney.
