Robert Fiddler (Bob or “Mr. Bob”) went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 14, 2024. Bob was born to James and Mary Fiddler on March 8, 1941 in Fall River Massachusetts. His early years were spent in Swansea Massachusetts where he attended St. Michael’s grade school and Joseph Case High School where he served on the Student Counsel for four years, Treasurer for two years, Sports Editor for four years as well as playing Baseball, working on the Yearbook and being a member of the Math Club. His Senior Yearbook described him as “An Outstanding scholar with a pleasing personality, well on his way to success.” After High School he attended the University of Massachusetts, however left college early to care for his Mom.
Early in life Bob became a serious Red Sox baseball fan. As his mother was disabled, his brother 6 years older, and his father frequently away, he found himself spending many hours listening to games on the radio or watching them on the “10-inch black & white set in the corner.” He would admit that watching baseball probably kept him out of some trouble growing up. As life went on, one of his great joys was being able to treat his children and grandchildren, friends and clients to games, be they in minor league stadiums like Syracuse and Pensacola or the big leagues in Atlanta, Chicago, New York or, of course, Boston.
Bob married young and took his bride clear across the country to California. His early life found him working in a variety of jobs from selling shoes, insurance, tools, cars and graves to managing a Dairy Queen and cooking…all in an effort to keep the bills paid. He lived in California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Texas and Maine. While Bob was growing up his father had a tax, insurance and real estate business. Following in his father’s professional footsteps he started “Phone-a-tax Mail-a-tax”, an innovative tax preparation service that was ahead of its time in terms of making it easy for folks to get their tax returns completed.
