David Paul Olson, affectionately known as “Spike”, passed away peacefully in Crestview, Florida on August 5, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on August 3, 1951, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, David lived a life of adventure, service and curiosity - distinguished by his profound sense of optimism and dedication that made him a steadfast and beloved husband, father and leader.
After his early years in Milwaukee, David enlisted in the Air Force in 1970 and while stationed in Korea and studying the martial art of Kuk Sool Won, he met and married the love of his life Yon Ok in July 1975. They moved to South Carolina where David went on to graduate from Clemson University and rejoin the Air Force as a commissioned officer. He retired as a Colonel in 2007 after a distinguished leadership career and went on to join the private sector – eventually retiring for good in 2021.
He spent his retirement traveling the world with Yon Ok and enjoying life’s simple pleasures (mostly sausages and cold beers). He told stories of questionable accuracy, he fell asleep during every movie, he was always starting a project, he loved classical music. He trusted that things would always work out (even when they didn’t). He was uncomplicated but complex. He had an ability to see the best in people and situations - his perspective about life inspired everyone who was lucky enough to know him.
David is survived by his wife, Yon Ok, and their children, Elliott and David. A service to celebrate his remarkable life will be held on Wednesday, August 20, at 10 a.m. at Crosspoint Church, South Crestview Campus. He will be buried with military honors at Barrancas National Cemetery.
