Gertrude Allen Obituary

Gertrude Georgianna “Gigi” Allen passed into the everlasting and loving arms of her Lord and Savior on May 27, 2021, after an extended struggle battling systemic lupus that lasted over fifty years. She is survived by her loving husband, retired Lieutenant Colonel Robert J. Allen, USAF, and her children Randall G. (Sue) Bundy and Mary K. Quinn (James) McWhorter. Bob and Gigi had a love affair that lasted over fifty years. They were married on June 5, 1971, in Whitehall, Ohio, and shared life adventures together while stationed at Rickenbacker AFB Ohio; Hurlburt Field, Florida; Wiesbaden AB, Germany; Grissom AFB, Indiana; and Pickerington, Ohio, before moving to Crestview, Florida in January of 1996. Gigi was born February 18, 1933, in Sarahsville, Ohio to the late Rev. George A. and Mildred S. Vorhies. She graduated from Cambridge Central High School in Cambridge, Ohio, class of 1951. She attended Muskingum College and the School of Nursing, Bethesda Hospital in Zanesville, Ohio. Professionally she worked in medical research and was employed as the senior office nurse for the late Dr. Howard Mitchell, Sr. and the late Dr. Howard Mitchell, Jr. in Bexley, Ohio. She was predeceased by her stepmother, Mrs. Thelma Vorhies; her sister, Janet C. (Mendel) Buehler; and her brothers, Earl R. (Delores) Vorhies; Paul R. Vorhies; and Carl A. Vorhies. In addition to her husband Bob and her son and daughter she is also survived by the grandchildren she adored: Rev. Dr. Patrick M. (Rachael) Quinn; Dr. Shannon M. Quinn (Josh) Lewis; Robert Dean Bundy, and Mary J. Bundy. She loved and is survived by her great grandchildren: Kaylee, Patrick, Caitlin, Janaya, and Maya James Quinn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews across the country. Gigi was always active in civic and religious organizations including serving as the president of the Officers Wives Clubs at Hurlburt Field, Grissom and Rickenbacker AFBs, and as the vice-president of the Wiesbaden AB club. More recently she was the founder of the Crestview Friends of the Arts as well as being a member of Crestview Chapter #203, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Shrinettes, Old Spanish Trail Shrine Club, Crestview, Florida. An active member of Crestview’s First United Methodist Church she was a longtime member of the chancel choir and various women’s groups. She will be missed greatly by Jesse, her dog and constant companion, and all who knew and loved her. Special thanks to Donna McKinney, her caregiver, and her Emerald Coast Hospice staff. Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home of Crestview, Florida. A visitation period will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at 3:00 PM at Crestview First United Methodist Church, followed by a Memorial Service at 4:00 PM at the church. Burial will take place on Friday June 4, 2021 at 11:00 at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL. Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
