Joan Smith Obituary

Joan Smith, age 82, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on April 23, 1937 in Mobile, AL to Crawford Tanner and Essie Schreiner. Joan retired from the Okaloosa County Health Department where she worked as a records clerk. Before working at the health department Joan worked for Jackson Veneer Lumber Company, Bill’s Dollar Store and the Value Mart. Joan loved playing Bunko with her friends, she loved to crochet baby blankets for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She served her community as Mayor of Laurel Hill for several years, and she loved people and never met a stranger. Most of all she loved her family. She was preceded in death by her husband James Harvel Smith, Sr., her grandson Daniel Smith, her brother James Hilburn and her parents.

          Survivors include her children: James Harvel Smith, Jr.; Larry Dwayne Smith and his wife Vivian; Lynn Denise Hughes and her husband Michael and Vernon Ray Smith; sister Evelyn Burke; grandchildren: Chris Smith, Adam Smith (Lisa), Mary Williams (Zach), Justin Hughes, Kristy Baucom (Daniel), and Hannah Smith; great grandchildren: Tate Williams, Caiden Graves, Hagen Hughes, Brooklyn Delano, Bryson Baucom, Gunner Baucom, Cheyenne Sheffield, Wyatt Sheffield and Chelsea Smith; and great great grandchild: Amelia, Carter, Anna Leigh, and Landon.

          A private family service will take place at Paxton Cemetery.

For those that want to show their respects, are humbly asked at Mother's request, to make donations to the cancer Freeze in lieu of flowers.
