Joe Allen Farmer
Joe Allen Farmer, age 93, of Crestview, Florida passed away on Monday, August 16, 2021. He was born in Slocomb, AL on July 16, 1928, to Henry Grady Farmer and Mary Ellen Spivey. He is a graduate of Slocomb High School and he attended the University of Alabama where he received a Masters Degree in Botany and his PhD in Biology. Dr. Farmer served his country in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He married his high school sweetheart, Janice Segrest, on November 20, 1951. In his early years, Dr. Farmer taught Biology classes and students would line up early to get enrolled in his classes. Dr. Farmer worked at Eglin AFB as the Supervisor of the Environics and Human Factors Office, Air Force Armament Laboratory, Armament Development and Test Center for 30 years. Dr. Farmer was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Los Caballeros and a member of the original Crestview Country Club, where he served on the Board of Directors. He loved the University of Alabama football team and never missed a game. He also loved golfing, fishing, farming, and hunting. He was a master craftsman who could build anything and a talented artist. He loved his church, and he loved his family and he adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren and he loved being around them. He was very much a family man. Dr. Farmer could answer any question about anything related to Botany, Biology, or Anatomy so well that if his family had a question they went to him for a textbook answer, that came straight from his mind.
Dr. Farmer was preceded in death by his parents Mary Ellen and Grady Farmer, and his brother, Jim Farmer. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Janice Farmer, his daughters: Diane Edwards and husband Bob, Pam Byrd and husband Warren, grandchildren: Andi Hoskins-Williams, Nick Byrd and life partner, Kimberly Ross, and Courtney Byrd-Henley. Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Presli Williams, Lily Reese Henley, Brody Byrd and Sabry Byrd. Dr. Farmer is also survived by one sister, Martha Kyser.
The celebration of Dr. Farmer‘s life will be held on Friday, August 20, 2021 at 11:00 am at Liveoak Park Memorial Cemetery in Crestview Florida. Visitation with the family will follow the service.
