Loney Edwin Whitley, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, November 29th, 2023. He was the first of six sons born to Loney Edwin Whitley, Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth (Miller) Whitley.
Loney and his five beloved brothers; Mike, Duane, Paul, Robin, and James, grew up together mostly in Destin, Florida. This is also where he met the love of his life, Janene Compton. They were happily married for over fifty-five years, until his passing.
They had two sons, Shawn and John Whitley, and raised them in a house full of love and laughter.
After serving in the Navy, Loney spent the rest of his career as an Air Force reservist and civil servant on Duke Field AFB, where he found a community of friends and family that continued long after they retired.
Loney lived a life defined by gratitude and generosity. He loved his family and friends and told them often. He found his post-retirement passion in charitable giving, both through Relay for Life and other organized charities, and in giving to individuals and families in need.
He was well-loved and respected by the hundreds of people he met throughout his life, and will be profoundly missed by those who knew him.
He is survived by his soulmate Janene, his son Shawn, and his grandchildren; Ryan, Zadie, and Raegen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by his brothers James and Paul, and earlier this year by his younger son, John Randen Whitley.
Per his wishes, there will not be a funeral service.
Some of his favorite charities were:
Crestview Area Shelter for the Homeless
ALZ.org
American Kidney Fund
Sanctuary Friend Network
Arrangements are entrusted to Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home in Crestview. Guest book and condolences are available online at www.whitehurstpowellfuneralhome.com
