Martha Jordan
It is with a heavy, yet joyous heart that we announce the home going of Martha Collins Jordan. She was born to Arthur and Emma Collins in Ashford, Alabama on September 23, 1928 and slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus on June 17,2023 at her home in Baker, Florida. After the death of her mother at a young age, she was raised by her father and stepmother, Mary Collins in the Harmon/Pansey area. She attended Troy University where she received a minor in Mathematics and Elementary education and then went on to receive her Masters in Mathematics at Florida State University. She met her late husband, Reverend T.T Jordan while attending Troy University, married in 1950, and enjoyed almost 50 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in the year 2000. She was also preceded in death by her father, Arthur Collins, birth mother, Emma Snell Collins, step mother, Mary Davis Collins, her brother Malon Collins, and sister Clara Cosby. She is survived by brother Robert "Lewell" Collins, sister, Elouise Sutton, sons Teddy and Tim Jordan, daughter Belinda Hughes, 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and countless friends and students. Martha touched the lives of so many through teaching. Her career started at Holt Elementary and after just one year continued to Baker School for another 14 years in the public school system. She concluded with 27 years as a Math Professor at Okaloosa Walton Community College. But her teaching did not stop there. Through her selfless love, she continued to tutor in the community and volunteer in the public school system until well into her 80s. She also took a sabbatical where she was given top security clearance at Eglin Air Force Base where she worked with some of the first computer systems ever made. A devout Christian, Martha served her church and community faithfully. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Baker where she, at one time, served as treasurer. She also served as treasurer on the Board of Directors for the Okaloosa County Teachers Federal Credit Union. Above all of these accomplishments, we believe her greatest to be the love and care that she exhibited throughout her lifetime. Martha was known for feeding anyone who walked in her door. Her grandchildren joke that she didn't just provide a snack after school, it was a full meal! And it wasn't a shock to be picked up from tutoring with a fourth of a pound cake in your hand instead of just a slice because she knew you liked it and made it especially for you. Sundays were for church and Sunday dinner, where everyone was welcome. Her home was often filled with strangers who quickly became friends through good food and fellowship. Most would say that Martha was a pillar of the community. She will be greatly missed by many, but forever in our hearts and memories. Ninety-four years doesn't seem like enough for those whose lives she touched, but one thing we know for certain is she's walking in the streets of Heaven now and forever more. Everyone is welcome to celebrate her life with us at Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home in Crestview Florida. Viewing will be held on Wednesday June 21, 2023 from 6:00-8:00pm. Funeral will be held on Thursday June 22,2023 at 11:00am with a short graveside service to follow at Shockley Springs Baptist Church.
