Minnie Dean Hollinhead Thompson

Minnie Dean Hollinhead Thompson was born October 6, 1928 in Wing, Alabama. She was the fifth child of William and Buelah Hollinhead and her twin sister Jean was number six. The twin's mother passed away ten days after their birth. William and Elon Kennedy took Minnie into their hearts and home as their daughter, or as her father called her, “Baby Girl”.

Minnie grew up in Escambia Farms, starting school at age 7 and graduating high school at 16. She eventually went to work as a nurse’s aide (now known as a CNA) at the hospital in Brewton, Alabama. There she worked with a nurse who introduced Minnie to her brother James Thompson.  They met on December 21, 1951 and married on January 1, 1952.  Yes, that was just 10 days later. They had five children, four boys, and one girl, and were married for 62 years.

Minnie enjoyed sewing and growing flowers. When her children were young she sewed many pieces of clothing for them. As her children grew up she went from sewing clothes to quilting. She really enjoyed quilting and made all of her quilts; start to finish, by hand. At 93 she still wanted to quilt because, as she said, “I can make something to keep somebody warm”.

Minnie passed away on October 26, 2022, at the age of 94.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, and oldest son, James Michael; her parents, brothers Curvie and Charlie, and sisters Sally, Peggy, and Jean.

She is survived by her children, John and wife Bess, daughter Jane, son Richard, son Fred and wife Danetta; Grandchildren, Lee Thompson and wife Ashley, Brad Thompson and wife Mary, Logan Thompson, Kevin Thompson, Stephen Thompson, Kimberly Gorham, and David Thompson; Great grandchildren Victoria, Sophie, and Calla Thompson, Laura McLemore, Phillip Thompson, Seth and Natalie Gorham, and Levi, Sawyer, and Hudson Thompson.

The funeral service for Minnie Thompson will be held on Monday, October 31, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home with burial to follow in Cotton Cemetery.  A time of visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 a.m.
