Sue Nixon Obituary

Sue Nixon passed away early in the morning on April 28th. Sue was the youngest child of Levi Day but was raised by her mother, Queen (Sylvia), and her stepfather, George Kelly. Her siblings included A. P. Day, Bill Day, Albert Day, Sara Bonnell, Mary Wells, and Hinton Day. She was a graduate of Laurel Hill High School and a proud member of the Beta Club.

In 1957 Sue met and married the love of her life, Haywood Nixon, when they were both young and working in Crestview. The two relocated a short time later to Fort Walton Beach where they built a life together that ended up lasting for 53 years. They lost their first child, Becky, but then raised two daughters, Angela and Amy, and one son, Tim. After returning to the north end of the county—first to Crestview and then to Milligan—they found joy in doting on and spoiling their granddaughters.

Sue was a hardworking, frugal woman and a person of faith. She was employed for more than three decades by the Okaloosa County School System in various secretarial and bookkeeping positions. And she was an active member at Westwood Baptist and Cinco Baptist in Fort Walton Beach and Woodlawn Baptist in Crestview. Sue and Haywood taught Sunday School classes together, and she served on several church committees. Furthermore, at different points in her life, she enjoyed square dancing, bowling, playing and coaching softball, and cards and boardgames.

Sue Nixon is survived by her children and grandchildren:  Angela, Randy, and Laura Vinzant; Tim Nixon and Kevin Moran; Amy, Jumai, and Isabella Brown and Liam, Collin, and Ryan Nixon. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Martha Anderson and well over thirty nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 24th, 2025 at 11:00am at Woodlawn Baptist Church. The visitation will be  from 10:00-11:00am.
