Vera Vernette Kirkland 83, passed away March 25, 2021 at Pine Knoll Nursing Home, Carrollton, GA.
She leaves her Daughters Janice Balte and Joy Park (Tom); her son Richard Kirkland (Pam); three sisters Mary Drop, Dean Sides and Donna Fleck; 9 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren; many dear nieces and nephews; as well as many close friends.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years James R. Kirkland; her parents Sam and Irene Helms; and her sons Micky Kirkland and Richard Balte. She was also preceded in death by her brother Verdis Helms.
Vera was born May 22, 1937 and raised in Baker, FL. She graduated from Baker High School. Vera lived all over the world with James as he served 22 years in the Air Force. After settling in Smyrna Georgia, she became a telephone operator for AT&T.
During their retirement James and Vera spent many days traveling in their RV meeting new and old friends alike at campgrounds throughout the Southeast. Vera was the planner and navigator of numerous trips with family and friends around the US and Canada. Finally settling in Quincy, FL, Vera became a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
Vera said she was happiest when family would gather and she could just "sit and watch her children tell their stories of life."
She loved to work puzzles on her computer. She also had a love for several of her small dogs she cared for throughout her life, as well as watching and identifying birds throughout her travels.
A visitation will be held Monday, March 29, 2021 at 9:00am at the Chapel of Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home with the funeral service at 10:00am. Burial will be alongside James at Shady Grove Cemetery.
