Neal Cobb, age 86 of Baker, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at his home. He was born on September 29, 1925, and has lived his entire life on that same hill. Neal graduated from Baker High School and went on to serve in the United States Navy. In 1942 at age 17 Neal won the Pensacola Boxing Championship. He also played in the Florida-Alabama Baseball League for 10 years and in 1954 won the National Batting Championship with a batting average of .432. Neal worked for the Okaloosa County School system for 30 years as the Director of Transportation and was a lifelong civil servant. Neal was an avid sportsman and quail hunting was his passion. “When he was your friend, he was your friend walking or riding.”
He was preceded in death by his parents Howell and Francis Cobb, daughter Melodia Cobb Paige, sisters Nellie Stair and Susan Livingston, Brother Jackie Cobb.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Nelda G. Cobb, daughter Joan Cobb Barrow, grandchildren and great grandchildren: Jeffery Barrow and Kathy, and their children Jason and Jeremy, Jami Barrow and wife Angie, their children: Jami Jr., Dustin, Katie, Travis, Joshua, and LilyJoy, Joey Barrow and wife Tina, their children: Joshua, Matt, and Robin, Jennifer Barrow-Ashworth and her husband Rodney and their son Garrett, and Daniel Neal Paige. Also surviving are his brother James Howell “Pete” Cobb and wife Mary, Brother in law John Stair, sister in law Betty G. Adams, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Covenant Hospice and nurses Kathy and Marie, and the caregivers Sheri, Theresa, Lisa, Ashley, and Rochelle.
A time of visitation with the family will be held on Friday, December 9, 2011, at Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. The funeral service for Neal will be on Saturday, December 10, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home with Reverend Raymond Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Cemetery.
