Ret MSGT Steve Van Wert, born 11 April 1947, was a loving grandfather, father and husband who served in the USAF for 22 years and 18 years in Civil Service. Steve retired from the Air Force in 1989 to Niceville then Crestview and worked at the Eglin Hospital CHAMPUS office. He retired in 2009 from Brooks City Base in San Antonio, TX, moving back to Crestview in 2012. He was a member of the Eglin Golf Club and played there several times a week, even getting a Hole in One on March 30, 2013 on the 16th hole. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending summers with his family at Disney World, where he went almost every year including the opening in 1972. The only thing Steve loved as much as his family was his love of the Philadelphia Phillies and baseball in general, which bordered on obsession. He could be found at Spring Training in Clearwater in March looking forward to the new season as well as excursions to Atlanta for Braves/Phillies games throughout the year. He is survived by his wife of 49 years Margaret (Mary), his three sons Daniel, Steven, and Michael, and his 5 grandchildren Chelsea Van Wert, Rand Van Wert, Courtney Van Wert, Kayla Van Wert, and Erin Tiede and by his sister Sharlen Van Wert. He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Dorothy Van Wert. Steve passed away unexpectedly at his home on August 27. His sudden disappearance from the lives of his family will be felt forever. We love you and miss you so much. Steve’s family would like to say a special thank you to the members of the NOFD and the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s department for their quick response and subsequent sympathies, they are greatly appreciated. Thank you for all that you do. Donations to the family or flowers may be sent to Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home in Crestview where there will be a viewing from 5-7pm with a rosary at 6:30pm on Monday 8/31.
